:00 and the nfl will announce today if san francisco is in the running to host a super bowl. >> reporter: we are not just talking about any super bowl. san francisco wants to host super bowl 50, a huge anniversary for the nfl that would include more than a week of events and celebrations. this is how this would work out. all the festivities would happen in san francisco. the actual game at the new 49ers stadium would be 40 miles down the road in santa clara. it's expected to open in 2014 and a stadium has to exist for two seasons to host the super bowl. san francisco is hoping to bid ant 2016 and 2017 games. the only super bowl in the bay area was in 1985 at stanford. the mayor submitted the application back in august and this is what's next. today nfl will announce which cities are in the running. if san francisco is one of them, it will host a plan on may 7th of next year. two weeks later the city will make a presentation to the 32 nfl owners. just to give you an idea, hosting a super bowl is expensive, about $25 million. san francisco wants to be part of the 50th and electricity reand say

of travel for the network. we are blessed in san francisco with the grid network to help us manage some of those turn movements in a more effective way. another area we looked at was how can we make octavia function even if we are not drastically reducing traffic. there are property improvements. most are familiar with oak and octavia, eastbound traffic making a right onto southbound octavia. there are opportunities we have worked out with the mta and project team to improve pedestrian crossings, provide corner bulbs, extend medians to the northern side and look at reconfiguring oak street to east of octavia from three lanes to two. recognizing that two lanes are only that what is provided from oak, west of octavia boulevard. this would help to also additionally channel some of that turning traffic and potentially extend that -- those two turning lanes further westward on oak to help ease that traffic, provide for more orderly cuing and paramount improve the pedestrian environment. >> it wasn't that long ago we constructed octavia boulevard. was there an anticipation we would be making

. >>> it is a big weekend in san francisco with more than a million people expected to pack the streets. tara moriarty is in the city with more on why you should expect big delays. >> reporter: we are here near pier 29 where come this weekend one northbound lane will be shut down from the ferry building all the way to bay street. that will allow emergency vehicles access in through the crowds. if you pan to the left, you can see we're in front of the official america's cup store. the cup is expected to draw 40,000 people this weekend to watch the races. and there are many more events planned. this will give city officials are a little bit of an idea of what to expect for the big america's cup next year where more than three million people are expected to attend. over the skies of san francisco this weekend, you will see the beloved blue angels. the u.s. navy pilots have been making practice runs for the big show set for saturday and sunday. it's part of fleet week and the parade of ships is tomorrow. here's a look at the other events going on. the giants will take on the reds in the national
. the charges against mirkarimi are not sustained. >> this vote is a defeat for san francisco mayor, ed lee, who wanted mirkarimi removed from office. you're looking at a live look from outside san francisco city hall where the meeting just wrapped up. 7 supervisors voted to sustain the charges of official misconduct. 4 voted to reinstate. he pleaded guilty in march to fall imprisonment charges related to an argument he had on new year's eve he had with his wife. he is currently on probation and in domestic violence counseling. it's unclear when he will get back to work. >>> gasoline prices at another record high today. take a look at the gas prices from aaa. san francisco at $4.74, oakland $4.68. san jose, $4.67. price relief could come any day. officials are making the less extensive winter blend fuel. but don't expect the prices to drop by a significant amount. >> we probably will maintain over the $4 mark. but we will probably be paying a lot less for gas per gallen of unleaded regular in the next 3-4 days. >> experts believe the price of gas will start to drop by the weekend because it take

is still on the loose this morning. san francisco police say think all began when officers tried to make a traffic stop for a light that was out on the license plate on the car. something very simple but it ended with this dangerous crash and the shooting and the sergeant we talked to says he feels lucky no officers were hurt. >> no one else was seriously hurt. the only injury i know of at this point is a hurt hand. given all things that could have gone wrong, i think this is pretty good. >> reporter: so san francisco police still out here investigating this morning. one interesting thing you can see sort of how violent this crash was. we saw a police officer who was carrying off the top of a parking meter. it was sheered off as a result of this accident this morning. police believe they have arrested the passenger inside this car. they are still looking for the driver of the car and at this point it's unclear why they ran from police this morning. the only thing the sergeant could come up with because they had a gun inside the car. live this morning in san francisco alex savidge ktvu ch
